  1. I don't think the nativity stories are historical. But I can think of an example of mass upheaval as everyone goes "home," which is New Year in China; to a limited extent the same thing happens at Christmas in (post)Christendom. So the argument is NOT that the Romans could not have done it, or would not have done it, BUT that as a matter of fact they did not do it.
