Problem is, Mary is not an uncommon name, so there's no real reason to believe that all women called Mary are the same individual, though that tendency to reduce the number of characters does result in the 6th CE creation of the mythological Mary Magdalene by conflating her with the woman taken in adultery. Perhaps making a lot out of one papyrus? Good on a PhD candidate for bigging up their research, but it's not very substantial. And if there was a deliberate effort to minimise Mary M., is it about a woman getting too big as a character (easier to ignore women, which is what they mostly did) or is it a counter to the importance of Mary in "Gnostic" gospels?
