  2.  @BrodieRobertson  That might be a little bit unfair to US infrastructure. A lot of it is crap, but you don't build infrastructure suitable for sub-Arctic conditions in the mild and damp Great North Wet--that would be wasteful. As weather gets more extreme, I guess a lot of places whose infrastructure was previously adequate will find that's not the case any longer.

  3.  @Gusto20000  I posted before Brodie's response, so I didn't understand exactly what he was saying. I don't seem to be the only one, and I think it would have had less people getting it arseabout if the form of words had been something like "reduction to 50% of its (previous) performance." But Brodie's not giving a lecture, so he's not obliged to fence off every possible misapprehension.

  4. Hah, coastal boy, eh? In Australia, I lived in Armidale (NSW), and in the nation's capital; and in both places I saw -10 C. It was, admittedly, in the middle of the night in the dead of winter, but it was cold. Also dry, so if you came into contact with any synthetic fabric on a winter morning, there were sparks when you put your hand (or key) near metal. Lovely days, but, +15 and better, but cold as when the sun set.

  5. January is, of course, the middle of summer here south of the equator. In most parts of Australia, 27/80 would be a pleasantly warm summer day, provided the humidity was ok. I'm in Auckland, NZ, with very high humidity, and here 27 counts as hot.
