+Cynthia G. why would they?

Cynthia G. I suppose, though I'm pretty sure the most common language taught at school (private school predominately) in Japan is French because it was considered the language of international diplomacy. That being said, foreigners should make an effort to learn the native language of the country they are visiting, not the other way around. Personally I thought that quite a few people in this video did speak English, the Buddhist priest's English in particular was excellent. I applaud the fact that you have learned to speak a second language so fluently but too often Anglo Westerners (like myself) take it for granted that English is spoken everywhere and don't make any effort to try to communicate with non Anglo Westerners in their native languages when they go and visit other countries and that comes across as entitled and lazy.

Cynthia G. That's such a shame, especially since Spanish is such a beautiful language! And especially embarrassing if the visitors are American since Spanish is so widely spoken there. I'm Anglo Canadian but can speak french and studied Spanish in high school (though I need to practice more since I'm getting rusty!) It makes me sad when I see fellow native English speakers refusing to put in the effort and learn another language, it makes us seem rude and that we just expect the rest of the world to adapt themselves for our ease.
