We need more folks like you in the Linux community. A completely rational, calm video explaining what's going on with Pop_OS. Awesomeness. And as an aside, I've been pronouncing it "guh-nome" since the days of Ximian Gnome... 2000ish? Rock on.

I recently switched two of my machines over to Debian 12 (running MATE) and I am really enjoying the experience. The setup process was yards ahead of what it used to be, the distro feels fast, even on my aging ThinkPad T460s, and it feels like I'm doing a good thing for the community. I remember when you could buy copies of RedHat (before the Fedora split and all that) at Kmart back in the '90s; it's a shame to see the direction RedHat has chosen.

I love this! I miss the spirit of the 90s web too. We had so much fun back in the day. These days it's a different kind of adventure.

This is a great introduction to GrapheneOS, thanks for sharing your experience. I have nearly zero experience with Android based phones, so this was quite interesting. Back in the day I was hoping Canonical would get their smartphone experience based around Ubuntu into wide adoption, but alas, 'twas not meant to be. Your video has me intrigued about this ecosystem; I may have to find myself a second handle Pixel to give GrapheneOS a whirl.

Even though the carve outs are questionable, this is definitely a step in the right direction. Hopefully more states will take notice and start doing the same. I'm a big fan of Free Geek, I've purchased several laptops from Free Geek Chicago and they've all run perfectly fine for many years beyond their "shelf life".

I've been using Debian on at least one machine since the late 1990s and I've always been pleased with how it performs. My desktops run on something built on top of Debian and again, very stable. apt just makes sense to me. Even though I've been using Linux in some way since 1997 or so (yay for buying Linux Mandrake at Kmart in late '98!) I have never dabbled with Arch. I should do that. But Debian continues to be my go to, especially on servers.

I totally never knew about man builtins, and I've been using this stuff for decades!

I bought the original Red Hat version 4 at a Kmart in 1997. I believe they were carrying Red Hat, Mandrake at the time, with Corel Linux coming a year or two later.

Excellent video. This gave a great synopsis of your quest without falling too far into the weeds. These old machines are wonderful; I'm happy you saved this one from a landfill. Great job!

Excellent video! I haven't looked at LMDE in a long time and this video compelled me to make the switch. I've been running Debian on my servers but messing around with different desktops, like I've been doing for way too long. Based on what you presented here, I think I'm going to enjoy the LMDE experience. I look forward to giving it a try. Thank you!

What? Don't save that ogg? Blasphemy.

When I worked at Digital (DEC) the manuals were *epic*. I took a couple of technical writing classes to help formulate those epic manuals, all arranged in three ring binders where the pages could be swapped out when there was a software upgrade. Not to besmirch Linux, but man pages don’t come close and don’t get me started on having to consult Discord or Reddit. Those manuals spawned a generation that knew how computers worked because we had to RTFM. Great video!
