By far the greatest amount of diesel use is by commercial trucks that are more heavily regulated, using particulate filters and diesel exhaust fluid which contains urea that through heat produces ammonia to converts nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and water. Heavy commercial trucks are also required to use Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel with a sulfur content of only 15 ppm. As a driver, I have stood in the exhaust of the truck during idle -- it is not even vented upward in this model -- and I had no trouble breathing at all and could detect no real odor. This diesel is a little more expensive than auto diesel produced for cars, however the commercial trucks today run far cleaner. This system can be developed for diesel cars, while the proportional increase to the cost of a new car with this system may be greater than that of a large vehicle.
