  1. This whole topic makes me aware of the power of belief systems. For ages we lived by 'God's' standards, but now this 'God' has somehow been replaced by things like science, technology, 'spiritual alternatives', but also temporary(!) dopamine boosters, such as food, drugs, entertainment, 'pron' and consumerism. Are we better off now? Hard to say. We got rid of oppression by the church, but now we're more free in our choices which can be very confusing at times. We've lost a lot of 'social cement' indeed, but now we're free to be more selective in the social domain, which isn't always easy. As for the comfort zone, we pretty much lived by the rules without asking too many hard quesions, but now many of us became lazy consumers. Again, are we better off? Hard to say if you ask me.
