Lots of Jeeps from the 60's-70's have that issue too.

LOL, you mean a marvel of hubris. VW actually engineered their cars to do what they were supposed to do. Beetles were over-engineered in a lot of ways, and the engines were actually indestructible as long as they had oil in them. Corvair engines were fragile, leaked, threw belts, and leaked exhaust into the cabin. Corvairs used a gas heater which was not only an explosion hazard, but reduced your "economy" car's mileage down to about 10 mpg. There's plenty of film available of these cars flipping at as little as 20 mph. Marvel of engineering indeed.

The Corvair was a stupid car, period. It was unsafe, and underengineered to save money. We won't even get into why an air-cooled car is a joke in the northern US. It was GM's attempt to copy European cars that were smaller and adapted for very different conditions, and as usual, they screwed it up. They knew they screwed up , because they came out with the Nova 2 years later, that was a vastly more reliable and predictable vehicle, not to mention much more amenable to being adapted for performance. The Corvair was an engineering dead end.
