  5. The Macbook was designed to absorb large amounts of cash from people eager to make a fashion statement. It's certainly not any better than any other higher-end laptop, and a lot less capable than some. My Elitebook that I bought off eBay for $99 is a more useful tool to me. My Samsung tablets are more portable, have more software options, and are far cheaper to replace or repair. A macbook is no different than a thousand dollar watch, it doesn't do one goddamn thing better than a fifty dollar Casio, it just lets everybody know you've got money. I suppose somebody could tape a thousand dollar bill on their forehead, that would be equally as useful from my point of view, and get the point across just as well.

  7. No, I mostly use old cheap second hand junk or PCs I put together myself from salvaged and bargain parts. I feel superior to no one whatsoever, and could care less what you think. Now, on the contrary, I've never met a Mac person who didn't immediately make their superiority known to all, subtly or otherwise.

  10. It's kind of pointless to recommend things because what one guy thinks is great another guy will think is junk. There are a million laptops out there, I find it hard to believe that they're all lacking in quality. People tend to think the system they're used to the most is the best. There's still people around who think that Windows XP is the best system. I had a guy tell me not too long ago that Windows 98 was the best OS ever made...both of which are funny, because people hated both of those systems when they came out. I remember when OS X came out, it was reviled by people used to System 8 and 9. Many of them swore they'd never upgrade. The point is, what seems like an awesome, easy to use system to you might not seem so to someone else. I've used about everything under the sun, and Windows is what I've stuck with because it just does the most stuff. If Garageband is important to you, then Mac may be the space that works for you. Apple has never had any interest in making it's signature software work on Windows, for obvious reasons. They don't sell software anymore, they sell an experience that they want people to buy into for the long term.

  11. Apple users are such arrogant snobs at times. I could design a better laptop than the macbook, and it would sell for less. The housing would be polycarbonate, which is unbreakable. The backplate/hinge mechanism would be steel and never break. It would be easy to service, with no adhesives. Key mechanisms would be mil-spec and not wear out. all the electronics would be shielded by a membrane so spill damage would be impossible. Funny how what seems obvious to an old ex-product designer like me is completely beyond the geniuses at Apple, Inc.

  14. cerhat Back in the day Apple used to build pretty good desktops and towers...though they were never really leading edge. Then came the iMacs and they started to put form ahead of function and make everything as cheap as possible. I've never been a fan of their laptops, they don't hold a candle to the rock solid serious products that IBM or Panasonic used to make. All the newer laptops just seem toylike to me.

  21. Windows 10 is the current version of the operating system. What does or doesn't work on older versions is irrelevant. If the phone is too old, it's too old. Almost anything that runs 8.1 has a digital entitlement to 10. Funny you would raise that argument, since Apple does not allow IOS apps to run on their desktops, period.

  22. That depends what you consider a "PC" app. There are some apps that are universal there are some that are not. Whether an app can run, or not, in a given environment, depends on the app. Since I don't know what app you're talking about I can't really address it.

  24. I said they started it with that, and they did, later versions were more stripped down and non-upgradeable. I did actually have one. Apple II and Macintosh represented two different schools of thought, and the Macintosh school, led by Jobs, was the one that won out. And the most repairable, expandable machine ever built is the plain old IBM-compatible PC. Apple doesn't even come close.

Creating a solder or wire bridge would require extra steps in production. Bridges are used as a design consideration to keep the board as small as possible. They're generally only used where current flow is small though, because normal variances mean that they're usually not actually zero, and for a critical circuit a very low value tight-specced resistor is a better choice because it will flow more current reliably.

  32. Apple has been treating it's computing devices as appliances from basically day one. They have always offered their products as discrete devices, rather than something you can upgrade, change, or modify. Even in the earliest days of the Macintosh and Apple II, they would very often solder components to boards, components that other manufacturers might choose to make removable, or replaceable. It's simply their approach. They see their products very much as appliances, delivered finished and perfect, not as something that is meant to be changed or modified to suit the desires of the end-user. They don't like you changing what they've designed in their infinite wisdom. Now that they are reaching market saturation, more than ever they will need to push sales of new devices to existing users, and one way of doing that is forced obsolescence. The othrr way, of course, is making them so difficult and expensive to repair that replacement is the only option.

  37. I am a strong believer in free speech and an open internet, and I heartily approve of Trump's deplatforming. It should have happened years ago. What most people are still failing to understand, is that there is no such thing as "free speech" on the internet, in any venue which is owned by a private entity, not here, not anywhere, and there never will be. The First Amendment applies to the government, not private companies or private spaces. As so many have pointed out, "actions have consequences", and Trump is experiencing the consequences of his actions...just as Parler is experiencing the consequences of their lack of action. I have no sympathy, none. Let the chips fall where they may. Any venue in a public space is going to reap what it sows and allows to grow. Parler was full of people spewing hate and threatening death, and it reaped what it sowed. Trump has spewed lies and misinformation for years, now he's reaped what he's sown. Goodbye and good riddance.

There's probably things Mr. Rossman and myself would likely not agree on, but one thing I will say without reservation is that he is probably the most relentlessly ethical and honest person you're likely to encounter in life, much less on YouTube. I've never met Linus or had any dealings with him, and he certainly seems like a nice enough guy, but I definitely get a vibe off him that I've gotten off any number of other "entrepreneurs" (for lack of a better term). He gives off a manipulative vibe, definitely. I think Steve Burke is a good guy too, but sometimes I get the sense he's getting overwhelmed with his own success and is ramping up the drama for the clicks. It's OK, I'll still watch GN. Louis is always interesting...he thinks things out VERY thoroughly.

  53. The actual case is somewhat more complicated than Louis makes it sound here. The discs were printed in China, for one thing, and there were 80,000 of them, and they were going to be sold for money....all red flags (no pun intended). While I mostly detest both Microsoft and Apple, and this guy should not be in jail, there is a lesson here...do not print large numbers of OS discs in China, then try to import and sell them...it will not end well. The guy also pled guilty.

  54. I read that the newest MacBook Pros and iMacs cannot be repaired without access to software which Apple does not release to third parties. If you attempt to replace any mundane hardware without access to their configuration software, the computer will not reboot. It becomes bricked. I wonder what all the Apple Fanboys think about that.

Laptops are irrelevant, anyway, because any hardcore Linux user can easily install and set up his own laptop, like I have done many times. There is no real serious option in phones, as far as a relatively high-performing modern phone with an accessible application ecosystem, and I don't expect to see one any time soon. You're stuck running buggy custom android roms, assuming you even have hardware that can load them.
