Here in the Netherlands even new cities (1950s+) do not have a grid pattern. Grid patterns are horribly dull and only barely help with navigation. Only complete tools need grid patterns to find their way easily. I navigate European cities all the time and it's fairly simple, even if you take the occasional detour. I've been to New York too and navigating it was just boring, just walking in a straight line. Great city though. And grid patterns aren't good for traffic. You have too many crossroads with traffic lights. A well-designed non-grid city is better for traffic.

+Mrbrain bob You're making no sense here.... Every car can drive on any road if it's suited for those cars, regardless of the curvature of that road. You're acting like the only possible way to design a non-grid city is a picturesque small French city with narrow streets that barely allow normal cars to traverse them. Organic designed roads have far LESS intersections (and/or far less bothersome intersections with traffic lights) if designed the right way. When designed specifically to guide traffic the right way with the least possible delays, it will always beat a grid city, which by nature is designed without thinking about traffic. It's just a grid, no special considerations for traffic, just straight roads.

+Mrbrain bob An intelligently designed road network is much better for traffic than endless crossroads with traffic lights.
