+Jason Bone Dutch subs used to do that with Russian ships during the Cold War. The subs were known to be one fo the most silent of the western world and they used to pop out the periscope mere metres next to Soviet warships to spy on them. Subs are pretty damn sneaky if operated right

+Andrew C Yeah, loud nuclear subs that silent diesel subs can detect with ease. Diesel subs are built around defence, they can only stay submerged for like 2 weeks and are very vulnerable when caught up top (running the diesel engine to recharge electricity and such). When submerged, however, they are simply the most powerful and dangerous machines in the sea. Nuclear subs have the benefit for extreme range and very long submersion times. This makes them viable for attacking from very long range (want to send a sub from the US to North Korea? No prob. With a diesel, though... more problematic, requires planning). They don't have the vulnerability of the diesel sub of having relatively short range and submersion times, but in exchange for that they are pretty loud and completely outclassed by diesels in actual combat. But diesels are really best used defensively, relatively close to base.

+Jim Nicholas US supercarriers are still not secure from European subs, so you still have much to learn then. Latest was France in 2015-16 wargames, sank US supercarrier and a few escorts with it. One sub again. And between the French and Swedes I think the British did it too.

Wrong. Destroyers are also vulnerable to submarines, very much so. Another European country once sank almost an entire carrier strike group with one submarine, including destroyers, command ships and the supercarrier they were supposed to protect. And other US submarines too, btw. And I believe it escaped to boot. Quiet submarines are extremely difficult to counter if the crew is highly skilled. The US only has more loud nuclear subs (essentially trading silence for excellent range). Destroyers aren't scissors, quiet diesel submarines are scissors to other, attacking submarines.

... but the accompanying carrier strike group is. It failed

So did the British and the latest is France in 2015 or 2016 (with a 1980's submarine lol). Everyone and their mother sank a US supercarrier lmao

The Netherlands also sank a US supercarrier in the late 90's. Theoretically, the US can send all 10 of its carriers over and the Netherlands itself, as tiny as it is, has a chance to sink the entire US Navy air force with its silent submarines. Don't underestimate anyone
