  1. Money money money... sometimes I wonder if we should start thinking of a better substitution for capitalism. It has its good sides but bloody hell it also destroys so much.

  2. Yeah everybody agrees on the fact that if we continue our capitalist ways the world will eventually be destroyed. Groups all over the world are working on a better system as we speak to replace capitalism. Somewhere in the future we'll have something else. I was more talking about the mentality that capitalism creates, but its effect on the world is much worse. Capitalism won't last long anymore. Here in the Netherlands we even already have a party in parliament that thinks capitalism and its need for constant growth is unsustainable and needs to be replaced by a different system altogether. Expect parties like this to crop up everywhere, especially once there are feasible alternatives to capitalism.

  3. But all of the bands you mentioned were highly popular, regardless of where their songs would end up on the charts. The question is, in 40 years, will we be listening to musical legends from the 2010's that may not have topped the charts but were still very popular? I don't think we have such legends today, at least not on the level of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, etc. We do have several good artists, don't get me wrong. But now more than ever are we being fed trash above actual quality. Strictly speaking, the music industry is all about money, not talent. It always has been, so in the past there's also been trash at the top. But talent back then used to raise more money than talent does today, because we are not taking the time to appreciate music anymore. Catchy trash is more relevant today than it ever was, I think.

  4. +Philip Cowell There is not a single band today with the talent of either the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd or any of the legends of yesteryear. That says a lot. The sheer amount of quality music they produced is unequalled today. I think the main difference between the past and now is that the trash (present in both eras, true) is now promoted more while the quality is left behind. It used to be quality over trash, but now it's catchy trash over quality that requires a longer attention span. So that doesn't mean there was less trash 40 years ago, but it does mean today we value the trash more than we used to. Think of this; in 40 years, what legendary musicians will we remember from today and how do they compare to The Beatles? The quality is held back today and trash takes the spotlight

  5. +Carlos Contreras Exactly. I believe the quality artists are there, but they don't get enough attention from the mainstream audience to come to fruitition the way former legends have. They aren't encouraged on the same level anymore and enjoy a limited fanbase. It's sad, really.
