Jonathan Xavier The West isn't a place in which we make migrants as comfortable as we possibly can. It's a place in which we respect eachother's rights and freedoms. Migrants, too, have a responsibility under the law to condone certain things. Nobody has the right to have their eyes shielded from someone else's way of clothing or to be separated from others. If so, I would also have the right to say I feel uncomfortable by people wearing Hijabs, therefore I go to a court to order them to take them off in my presence or stay out of my sight. It makes no sense. A free society means that you yourself are free to be what you want, but also that you must accept others that do what they want.

yetlin That people CAN wear a bikini if they WANT is indeed a symbol of freedom, people may wear what they please here. That women are forced or heavily encouraged to wear Hijabs and not allowed to swim with boys is called oppression

yetlin Because for the woman in the bikini it's her own choice and for the woman with the hijab it's a religious rule that prescribes she must wear it and of course her family pressuring her into wearing one, enforcing that religious rule. The woman in the bikini was never told by anyone or any book she must wear a bikini and one day... decided she would wear it all by herself, because she and she alone wanted it. She could've chosen for a bathing suit that covers more, she could've even chosen for a full-body bathing suit that covers all. The woman with the hijab was raised to believe she has to wear a hijab and told by others she should wear it (and in some cases even forced to wear it). It takes strength to stand up to that kind of influence.

yetlin Because I have never seen an orthodox Jewish woman in my life. Even when you google "orthodox Jewish women" you find almost only pictures of regular women dressing as they please. That's how rare they are even in the Middle East, let alone in Europe... Just admit it, Muslim women are told to wear Hijabs and influenced into doing so by social pressure because it's an Islamic rule. In the west we have no such rules. That is true freedom.

yetlin Not every woman is pressured. And even if you're correct; there are different gradations of pressure and Islamic women are right at the top in terms of pressure. In Europe, of course kids will want to wear what is "cool" at that time but the important difference is this; the woman is not explicitly told or suggested to wear certain types of clothing and all "fashion" is women seeing what other women wear and WANTING to wear it too. Another important difference is that if you wear something different, nobody will look at you strangely. Nobody is going to ask what you are doing when you're not wearing a bikini; everyone accepts your choice. Ask yourself, would a Muslim family not even utter ONE word if the daughter suddenly decides to take off her Hijab? In Europe you are free to follow fashion and free to follow a very personal taste, nobody will criticise you and nobody will try to convince you to do otherwise. There is no social pressure and even if there would be, that pressure would be very very light and easy to withstand.

Rydro "Well isn't that her choice not to go to school?" Children must go to school and children must learn how to swim. And in school or in swimming class they might find the behaviour of others uncomfortable. That's their problem. By your logic I can stay away from school because I feel uncomfortable by people wearing Hijabs. This makes no sense. In a free society you have rights, but you also have the responsibility under the law to respect or condone what others do or what they dress like. Freedom means you can do what you want, but also that others can do what they want and that you have to accept that.

Qais Almutahr Well, our system is clearly working better as there are thousands of migrants drowning trying to get here. Should have let some "strange people" teach your children to swim :)
