I saw a picture of the Holodomor in which two parents were standing next to the severed head of their child, who had starved to death. The explanation of the picture stated they were selling the meat of their deceased children in a last bid to survive. I'll never forget that. The next one is unrelated to history per se, but I'm a law student and I once read a judgment about tort damages that had a terrible story behind it. A child was playing outside and a ball or whatever she was playing with ended up behind a taxi. The taxi reversed as the child was trying to fetch her toy and hit her. The mother ran out of their home towards the child, seeing her unconscious. She picked up her daughter, but as she rested her hand behind her head, it didn't support the head but instead disappeared within the cracked skull of her daughter. The mother ended up with severe psychological damage from this experience and got paid damages for this, but the real damage was done. The idea of trying to pick up your child but suddenly realising your hand is not on but inside her head and then seeing the terrible gore is such a punch in the gut. Last one is about history again. My aunt was held in a Japanese concentration camp in the Dutch East Indies during WW2, but never wished to speak about it. Reading up on some accounts of what it was like was a punch in the gut that made me understand...
