UK: joins political and economic union, leaves it again UK: I'll fucken do it again

@BRDrivingSim Finland is in the EU and has elaborate cooperation with, though no membership of, NATO. The EU has an attack on one is an attack on all principle in its treaty and would lose all its credibility as a union if it allows Russia to invade Finland unchallenged. Once the majority of the EU is involved, chances are the USA will get directly involved as well. The defence situation of Finland is simply too solid for Russia to attempt an invasion. War with the EU alone is suicide for Russia, considering the disparity in industrial capability, let alone war with both the EU and the US. Russia would have to be insane to even attempt an invasion of Finland. Chances are they would initially struggle intensely against Finland alone. It simply is not going to happen.

@arty5876 You are right that the war is economically and ideologically motivated mostly. But you are mistaken that NATO is only a military alliance. Part of a NATO membership action plan (you can f.e. look up Ukraine's MAP!) is also to push through economic reforms that benefit western economies, promote trade with NATO members and to ensure economic security. Economic security means not being dependent on "enemy" states for trade, i.e. not being dependent on trade with Russia. NATO itself is directly threatening Russia economic security. This is why they have decided to violently oppose NATO, more and more violently as they came closer to their borders. Now we see the most violent actions of Russia yet. Yes, the things you named play a role, but so does NATO and its economic demands for new members. NATO is not a neutral defence organisation, it is the sphere of influence of the US. Political, economic and militarily as well.

We could probably secure the Baltics in the long run, but invading Russia? Nope.

Actually Russia has a very formidable military that within proximity of its own borders can give NATO a very hard time. Especially short term, they actually have a decided advantage. But long term they are absolutely hopeless against an EU war economy alone, let alone all of NATO.

@uroboros4260 The idea that the EU would sit back and watch one of its member states be attacked is ludicrous. That would be like geopolitical suicide for the EU. A surefire way to make it that nobody ever takes the EU seriously ever again. They would not be stupid enough to not intervene.
