  1. That metro design isn't all that nuts, actually, it's only incomplete. Public transit system can never take you, to where you're going in one go. Metro is great for rapid connection of two major points. Say you have an airport on one end, city center in the middle and say a harbor in at the other end. All three destinations attract a lot of people, but not from each other. That is why you have (usually) bus lines follow the metro, going zigzag along the route, bringing passengers to the rapid line, so they can continue to their destination, usually with a second change at another hub. Just look at Prague transit system, you'll see such lines, along with interconnecting lines between different methods of travel, be it tram, bus, metro, boat or train.
