I really don't think we have seen the end of the battleship. Somebody will revive them one day. Why? There will always be need for long range artilery, even with methods used today. Will there be many of them? No. There are not as many roles for a battleship to fill, but the one she excells at, is irreplaceable. Sure, air force can do a lot of the stuff better than a battleship, but, pilot controlled aircraft, regardless of it being controlled from a cockpit or a room on the other side of the planet, has drawbacks. Remote controll? Jamming. On board pilot? Too great of a risk to lose the pilot due to heavy anti-air. There is nothing one can do against incoming shell, except get out of harm's way.
