  1. That is actually simple. The problem is mutation, which will occur in a large enough sample, guaranteed. The main problem with Delta is how quickly it spreads. The mutation, that caused this, made the virus less deadly, which was fortunate as hell. Problem is, mutations can not be predicted and thus these people have to think in the blackest possible scenarios out there (basically play plague inc on the lowest of difficulties). What they fear and what they mean by "this is not the last variant we're talking about", is that sooner or later a variant will come, that will be as quick to spread as the Delta, but as deadly as the Smallpox. That is why the aim is not to allow for people to work relatively safe. We are there already... minus the anti-vaxer movement. No, the aim is to completely eradicate the virus like we did with Smallpox, because only then can things return to normal.
