And what about the fact, that employees have right to privacy? What about the fact, that the computer used for this in their homes, is usually in the same network? I know, tin foil fool talking here, but I really don't think that the employer has the right to know, what's going on on the remote network, or what's going on in the employee's house. I really don't think that employer is entitled to this, even for as beneficial reasons as those, which you have stated. Rather, he should measure results categorize those and look for commonalities in them.
There is another question to answer. Should the employer discipline and employee, who doesn't do anything, when at home or at work, for long periods of time, while all the assigned work is done? (happened to me once) I'd say not! One could try to funnel more work to that guy, but shouldn't the employee get higher salary then? He's providing more to the company, but he has no incentive to do so and no compensation for this extra work! So he'll likely quit.
The core question here has to come from a different point. I'd say, that what need's to change is remuneration for jobs. What I'd like to see is a system, where there is a monthly "retainer" to establish basic cooperation between employer and employee and every task carried out to be awarded some amount of money. And let the employee do, what he want's, pay him, for what he did and if employer thinks it's not enough, end the relationship. Lawyers work this way.
