Keeping human remains in sight is an ancient tradition hailing all the way back to the Cult of the Skull: that of the Reminder of Mortality. The Romans called it "Momento Mori" and it used to be a feature in countless portraits, paintings, and murals. In life, we all too often come to subconsciously assume that we are immortal because we divorce ourselves from death wherever possible; that Reminder of Mortality is a remedy. It says, "You're going to die like your ancestors before you and your descendants who follow; thus cherish life, do as much as you can with the time you have left, and ask, 'How will I be remembered and how will I be judged?'"

@@ozibits3444 The premier fixture of most, if not all, Christian churches is a crucifix upon which hangs the bleeding, thorn-crowned, and wood-nailed effigy of a desiccated heart-pierced Jew with head hung in exhaustion and desolation, forsaken by His Father and your hangup is a pile of bones or a skull? Okay, Christian; kudos to you for performing that feat of mental gymnastics...
