Very true... many people end up being guilty in a court of law, because they were just there.
I'm sorry for what happened to you, and I'm sure you're much more cautious with who you hang out with, and even question if something seems off so you can try to leave sooner so you're not in another bad situation.
I don't know what happened with you, but I do know that there seems to be a lot of people charged with accessory, if/when it comes to a robbery or murder, if the person is with them. Yes, in a many cases, the person knew what was going to happen, but... in some cases they didn't. Because of that, they shouldn't automatically be charged, unless they can prove there was prior knowledge or they didn't say something after (which would be both very difficult to do to a "friend" and in some circumstances, scary as well. I'm sure some would worry about their own safety, if they report something.
I would hope that the law/court would try to see an actual connection and what somebody chose to do afterwards, but at both know that doesn't always happen. Example, if somebody was with somebody who committed a horrible crime; say a murder or armed robbery (and they were there and knew after the fact what had happened-even in just the car), although it would be hard to go to the law, I personally think that in that kind of a situation, you HAVE to, if there's going to be any chance for you not to get in trouble. Doing so would help more in the end, versus not doing so and being seen on a ring cam or traffic cam. Otherwise when they bring you in, you have to try to explain how you weren't involved, but didn't say anything or report a crime, and we all know how that goes.
Yes... it sucks to have to nark on a friend. But... you bet your ass I'm going to do it, if it means protecting myself and not going to jail for somebody else's crime and something I had no prior knowledge of.
(sorry for such a long comment)
Hope you have a great day!
