I think as an American this stems from our confusion of where we are at on the world stage. People from the outside looking in have no clue how much the position we’ve been has been a struggle in our identity, too many are looking at it as if we are entitled to not appreciate it. The thing is plenty of Americans love and appreciate our country, however, the consequences of living as the sole superpower has felt like living in a fish bowl for the rest of the world to point and examine. And those of us who have looked into our history can’t help but question how we got in this position, all because our economy managed to come out of this war intact, we had our hands on the most powerful weapon to be created, and we stepped in to help the world recover.
I think Tucker’s argument is deeper than that, a growing number of Americans are growing tired of being the world’s leader yet making the hard decisions that affect others. Tucker represents the MAGA who got tired of being put on the side for a position our ancestors didn’t ask for, in fact, most of them came to our country to escape the rest of the world.
It’s likely Tucker has this deep resentment toward Churchill not for the conditions things are today per se, but Churchill was a huge contributor to shaping the US to become a dominant force. As an American that does want us to have a moment of isolation, I can look back and appreciate that Winston had that much faith, whether he wanted to or not, to see our potential as a nation that didn’t really have an army at the time. However for Tucker, it’s likely he stems his resentment as if Churchill dragged us into WWII, and is taking it out on Churchill’s legacy. In some case it’s understandable because Churchill saw the writing on the wall and made preparations that did contribute us Americans to get in the war faster. And Tucker is using a faulty argument of today’s trouble to dig in Churchill’s role, and I can see some aspect cause the result of the end of WWII the British was losing their status in the world and passed the mantle to us Americans.
And while our country has a lengthy history of battles, the wars in the 21st century were a lot of proxy wars that over time just broke our spirits. The war in Iraq just fractured our country, along with Afghanistan it became a wild goose chase and so many of our so called allies mocked us, hated us, resented us. People from the outside assumed that American pride was too much, but they don’t understand how we’ve been struggling with our patriotism in the last 20 years and it’s made us question ourselves and our role in the world. We’ve been put on the pedestal so the world can knock and blow our pride, in the meantime Americans have viewed our position as being chained to the world. And we can’t help but reflect back to where our country went wrong, some say Reagan, some say Johnson, even FDR. We can go back to the Spanish war we had cause through that war we were granted different land from the Spanish, and then we bought the Philippines to stabilize our country’s security of the Pacific, starting this imperial mindset. And it could go further back, as far back as Washington cause Washington warned the country to not get involved with the old world.
Sad that Tucker doesn’t recognize Churchill for being that beacon of hope for the west, and sad that he is taking his conflicting thoughts on Churchill’s legacy. Churchill was a man like many, flawed but human, and what made him stand out was his belief in a free society and being determined to do what it takes to save it.
