This is one of the most well balanced biographies of Jefferson, today to many skip over the dedication Jefferson made to all humans, he sadly wasn't able to success with emancipating slavery, but he kept trying despite owning some that were inherited. If people actually looked at history with the mindset of the time period, not the garbage bias opinions shown today, slaves were in fact not considered human beings but property, with that there were laws that if anyone was in debt they could not sell their slaves till the debt was paid properly. Thomas was lucky to free who he could, sadly as he also inherited most of his slaves, he also inherited debt that started with his father in-laws inheritance. Along with most of his time being a politician in a new country where it's less likely to get great pay, it could have contributed to further debt issues.
Jefferson was stuck in a precocious position as these slaves he cared about could have been taken away and resold to owners who didn't have the same humanism mindset Jefferson had. He was walking on eggshells and had to be cautious of the situation politically as it could also have led the civil war to happen much earlier with just as devastating consequences as it was a new country that was still trying to stabilize itself. I think he tried to make the best of his situation and did what he could to provide the best to those slaves, he was noted to encourage teaching his slaves art trades or other specialties so they could be less likely be out in the fields if they went to another plantation.
People should look more into the details of Jefferson's position before slandering his reputation, there has to be awareness of the environment to understand history itself. It's not just a cut dry situation, there is deep complexities that paint a different picture than people are willing to acknowledge, something I think needs to be addressed.
