Reason #1 for outlets having switches: flicking a switch causes less wear than plugging and unplugging a plug. If you have a space heater (they work really well on 220v) you don't want it running all the time when you're not in the room, so you will probably want it turned off... and plugging and unplugging anything is harder than just flicking a switch. I'm sorry you didn't grow up with them, and so couldn't imagine they were for convenience, and not just a safety feature.
