One thing that isn't quite talked about enough, probably because people feel guilty complaining about it, but the general American public have this apathy from years of overseas conflicts/interests and they're ignored. The powerful in America only listen to the citizens to temporarily placate them but the citizen is ultimately ignored. The citizen is no longer a focus. The elite are concerned with building soft power overseas. Citizens don't feel like they have a say and they don't feel included in the country's goals, so they no longer have a purpose. There's also the case where a lot of 'promises' or expectations were built just after WW2, where we peaked. Now America is declining and the elite are probably panicking to shore up as much global soft power as possible and ignoring the citizens. The citizens are viewed like cattle and told to shut up when they complain.
