One of my best friends was a squad leader in the 10th Mountain Division and he served many tours in Iraq and I think Afghanistan. He has told me some crazy stories. Like how a mortar hit one of their latrines and showered them all in poop and pee. He also said when he was injured in combat, he only noticed he took shrapnel hours later because the adrenaline was so intense. I asked him how it felt to kill and he genuinely did not know if he killed anyone because his SAW had such a large muzzle flash. He said he was unsure if he was responsible for the kill. He's a wild dude and he tried to get me to sign up with him again because he wanted to go back. You could tell. A party animal and a great guy, but you could tell there was something wrong.
