  1. I'd say there's a major piece you left out: Russia is fighting a conventional war in Ukraine. Afghanistan was an asymetric nightmare, just like it was for us for 20 years. But luckily for Ukraine, the war can always become unconventional if their military fails conventionally. I also don't see Russia successfully suppressing partisan activity, especially since they had trouble in Chechnya. Ukraine is just too massive, with too much outside support.
