  1. The French didn't "immediately" help in the American revolution. They waited 3 years AFTER the war started. Once they saw the Americans winning battles, notably Saratoga, they started helping. To say the US wouldn't have won without their help is a stretch as well. It's like saying the US single-handedly defeated ISIS by providing bombing runs. Yes, the help was very much appreciated and needed but the soldiers on the ground win battles.
