My best friend was a SAW gunner in the 10th Mountain Div in Iraq and Afghanistan and I asked him "What was it like to kill someone?" and his answer was similar to yours. He said engagements were largely far away and the muzzle flash hid a lot of the aftermath. You could tell he didn't want to dwell on the subject, so I made sure to be a bit more respectful going forward. He's a good dude, and you can tell he's dealing with demons.
