One of my relatives was a US Marine, who fought in Iwo Jima, and witnessed his best friend KIA. He was an alcoholic and hated the Japanese until the day he died. The war ruined him. He died when I was around 10, so I didn't know him well. I just knew one moment he would be angry, and the next he would be a party animal. My dad used to dive for oysters with him. Apparently he was a fun guy.
