  2. Is there a real reason slide rules are still used today as backups? You could add 100 spare calculators with batteries for a negligible cost, and all of them will be easier to use by a slide rule, especially in an emergency by someone who may not have ever used the emergency slide rule under pressure in his life. And the calculators will also be faster and more accurate. And anyone could use them even without training. EDIT: I looked into it, and it mostly looks like they're used in training or as backups to backups and in practice don't get used by pilots much or at all. Pilots and copilots do bring backup batteries and devices, so these are pretty much obsolete.
