@joaocerceau5810 You aren't wrong, but the way you wrote it is a little pessimistic. Typically, investment drives growth, and growth drives investment. It's not like richer countries automatically earn their prestige through already having money. Real economic progress is the norm for middle-income countries, and there is no reason Mexico can't follow suit. At least, it could if it had a strong leader negotiating with a U.S. that wasn't run by some blockhead protectionist like Trump or some sleepyhead apparently-also-a-protectionist like Biden. If the U.S. were to cooperate with Mexico in a meaningful way on border issues, imports, infrastructure, and other projects, it could massively benefit both countries. So we should push for it.

@leonardo899 That's appalling. Mexico has far more favorable time zones, for one thing. I wonder if it has more to do with English comprehension or ease of doing business. I would expect that English comprehension would be higher in Mexico (and on top of that, knowledge of Spanish is highly relevant for serving much of the U.S.), but the population of Mexico is far lower than India or even Indonesia, which makes it sort of an uphill battle. The bigger issue could be perceived risk of foreign investment, though that perspective may be changing.

@Homer-OJ-Simpson He isn't wrong. If Mexico's growth only depends on undercutting labor in the U.S., its wages by definition can't rise as high as the wages in the U.S.

@wakkaseta8351 Good point. The real problem here is that gay people exist. If they stopped existing, Mexican drug cartels would disappear. That makes a lot of sense.

I forget, what was this trade war supposed to accomplish again? Did we win? I never really got it in the first place. This time, there wasn't the whole outsourcing issue or any plausible complaint. The whole premise seemed to be just taking China down a peg, with any benefits to the U.S. being secondary.
