  1. To say that scientists have never seen an atom out of place is pretty misleading. Many types of graphene defects have already been discovered, though scientists haven't been able to locate the exact atomic positions yet. That's because they have just started looking. E. Cockayne et al., for instance, suggest "Modeling efforts showed how finite defects in graphene . . . can be systematically classified and enumerated, providing an endless variety of candidate defects to investigate."
