  1. It's not amazing at all. Universities seek out professors doing cool research, because they attract students and increase their prestige, and because they can contribute important perspectives and fascinating research opportunities to their graduate students. Universities aren't really in the business of making and selling goods or whatever. It doesn't matter if there is an industrial application for his research.
