  1. I first learned about ddwfttw on Wikipedia a little over a decade ago. The idea is totally bonkers, and at first I had a similar reaction that it couldn't work, but the descriptions of its operation seemed pretty convincing. The vehicle moves directly downwind, but the propeller blades are never perpendicular to the wind like the sail of a boat travelling that way. They are constantly tacking. I really like the visual of the cylindrical Earth, though. I think that is the perfect way to drive home the equivalence between the wind-driven propeller and the tacking sailboat.
