  1. Newton's third law states that for every "action" (force) there is an equal (in magnitude) and opposite (in direction) "reaction" (force). In this case, the force that the Earth exerts on Derek is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the force that Derek exerts on the Earth. I'll say that again: Derek pulls the Earth up just as hard as the Earth pulls Derek down. Of course, the Earth is far more massive than Derek, so it hardly accelerates at all due to this force, whereas he accelerates quite a lot. Newton's third law certainly does not state that the accelerations must be equal.
