While we have never measured (and presumably cannot measure) the one-way speed of light, we do know that the two-way speed of light is isotropic. So whatever the speed of light c⁺ is in some direction x, the speed of light in the direction -x must be c⁻ = 2c - c⁺, and that is true for every direction x. This is what Michelson and Morley first demonstrated. This is inconsistent with early aether theories, though it is consistent with modern "Lorentz ether theory." That is, it is possible that there is a preferred frame of reference in the universe, but the laws of physics (including length contraction and time dilation) are such that the principal of relativity arises as a coincidental result. Nearly all scientists reject this model because it is not useful and seems to introduce the Lorentz transformations as ad hoc hypotheses. But a few stubborn philosophers like William Lane Craig still cling to it, since they feel the existence of a preferred rest frame is somehow necessary for the existence of God or whatever.
