+Veritasium It is difficult to believe that deionized water would produce any appreciable charge separation purely from the hydronium and hydroxide ions alone, as the concentration of these ions is very low, and your apparatus is not a perfect system.

MR5er1 I understand the principle, but like I said it is not perfect. Hydrogen and hydroxide ions won't even accumulate on the mesh. Even if they do, it will take a long time to build up a charge, if it even builds up at all and doesn't get washed out by noise. Distilled water has a resistivity on the order of 1 GΩ·m. I don't know the resistance of the open circuit in this setup, but it's hard to believe it's greater than a gigaohm.

Jim Swenson 1 MΩ·m = 100 MΩ·cm. It has nothing to do with how they are computed; it is just a unit conversion. 18 MΩ·cm = 1.8 GΩ·m.
