Nitinol is a fascinating material. But have you heard about nilinol?
Nilinol is the zeroth member in the sequence of alcohols: nilinol, methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, pentanol, hexanol, .... It is a corrosive solvent capable of dissolving most metals and corroding some by exposing them to dissolved oxygen. It is used in large quantities in heavy industry in the production of Styrofoam, pesticides, and concrete plasticizers. It is used as a coolant in nuclear power plants and a reagent in the production of dangerous chemicals like sarin. Nilinol can act as both an acid and a base and accounts for more calculable damage to society than any other compound. Yet still today it is added to our food, our drinking water, and our air.
