@QUBIQUBED All metamorphic rock forms that way, but you can still smash slate with a relatively small localized pressure.

@engineernels1057 Heating a diamond at 1 atm actually converts it to graphite. Once the diamond has fully turned into graphite, you can continue heating it until it eventually sublimates.

@engineernels1057 You have to heat it significantly hotter than that to boil diamond. But I guess it depends how quickly you heat it and how much there is. I imagine you could heat a diamond to like 3.5 kK and just wait for it all to evaporate and never get any graphite.

@farazaghsani9381 Lasers are often used to cut diamond, but usually the diamond is water-cooled during the process. I worry that if you don't cool the diamond, the laser might just catch it on fire.
