In England, the burden is reversed. The defendant must prove that the offending statements are true. So for instance, if I claimed an English homeopath was offering snake oil that did nothing to treat any disease, and the homeopath sued me for defamation, I would have to come to court with a bunch of scientific evidence demonstrating that homeopathy is ineffective. Then the homeopath could come to court with a bunch of evidence contradicting that. And if the jury couldn't decide whether homeopathy worked or not, they would be instructed to find in favor of the plaintiff. It's frankly ridiculous, and I don't know how English people tolerate it.
