  1. It's a little bit different. Ignorance is not a defense to murder, but if the police acted in a way regarding which there is no established law, then they are immune from being sued for wrongful death. So it's less like getting away with speeding because you didn't know the speed limit and more like not being on the hook for damages caused by speeding because the speed limit was not marked and there had never been a case before where someone hit another car while speeding.
