  1. I think the difference was the way the state and the media finally came out against the Church. A lot, and I mean a lot, of Catholics in particular were in complete denial, and in their defense, the record backed it up. Priests were almost never even tried, let alone convicted. But more than that, the idea that the entire system was set up to prevent prosecution of offenders probably didn't surprise you, but it did surprise a lot of people. My father wasn't all that religious to begin with, but he still had a serious reckoning when those stories broke. Imagine people you had held up as righteous your entire life being held up one by one as examples of the worst in the world. And not only that, but the institution they represented was helping them do it, on purpose. A lot of people had been saying that for ages, but there's a difference between "some people say" and "everyone knows." "Some people say" a lot of stupid crap, and that doesn't concern me. But if everyone knows something, I need a damn good reason not to take notice.

  3.  @rogue-taxidermy_griffin  Do you happen to know the numbers for first-English-speakers? I would imagine most primary English speakers in Canada have broadly similar views to those in the US, while Québécois in Quebec and the diaspora (e.g. New Brunswick) might not have exactly the same political views as Catholics in the US, who are dominated by a few (very different, but still few) groups: Mexicans, Italians, and Irish (plus French, Spanish, third-generation Quebecois, and Hispanic peoples from the Caribbean and the south of Mexico, along with French Guianese etc.).
