Do ragtime and Scott Joplin actually get a "bad rap"? I've only heard them described as a historical genre and an iconic musician. The reason most people only know (at best) one song is that the genre became unpopular with the rise of jazz a century ago. I bet most people don't know a single work by Brahms, and that's definitely not because he has a bad rap.

@JFrameMan MIDI is basically like a text document, and it relies on sound fonts to be played back. Different people will have different fonts installed, so the piece will sound completely different. It's closer to a music roll than to a record. There are also substantial limitations imposed by the format. It does have the one advantage of being extremely space-efficient, so at least it isn't a totally obsolete relic like GIFs.
