For those wondering: the word "nickelodeon" comes not from nickel + collodion (as the joke implies) but from nickel + melodeon (originally a type of reed organ, one that was popular through the end of the 19th century, but also a word used to refer to music halls). So a "nickelodeon" was a theater that cost a nickel. Implications of a coin-operated machine of some sort come much later.
