@SilverLining1 Also, Bayer and Diaconis wrote this paper in '92, so it's possible he hasn't really updated his information for a while. By the time he gave this interview, new CPUs were already implementing hardware RNG (not PRNG). But back in the early 90s, a slot machine that had a robust PRNG running hundreds of times per second would be, while probably not impossible, surely pretty rare. And I know Diaconis is talking about these exploits from personal experience. Also, at least as recently as 2017, people were still identifying flaws in some relatively new slot machines. Just because it is (perhaps) possible to build a machine that is resistant to every exploit doesn't mean every machine actually is, and it can be hard to know which ones are vulnerable until you have been taken several times.
