I don't know what it is like now, but back in the day when I was managing restaurants the rule was 30/30/30 Wages/Food, Utilities and Rent/Profits. 3 years to make the original investment back. Not one of my employees were making less than minimum wage after the first month and the ones staying on more than a year would be making double that. Minimum wage would allow you to rent a one bedroom apartment and barely) enough money to save anything if you were frugal. Something is definitely out of whack nowadays.
