Pistols are both tactically (at short range) and statistically (in terms of total harm done) far more dangerous. A criminal can easily carry as many as eight 9mm automatic pistols on them and fire them with each hand, so two at time. The reload times compared to a rifle are similar and you can always go for a spare if interrupted mid reload so the pistols are more dangerous. They are far easier to conceal too. You could even argue that at ranges under 100 metres a simple bow and quiver of arrows is more dangerous than a rifle as they are silent so people are less likely to hear anything and call 911 on time. Nobody deserves to be murdered in any way and no family deserves to suffer that sort of loss, but having a loved one, friend or colleague murdered does not make you an expert on anything other than how it feels to have a loved one murdered, it gives you less than zero insight into the nature of the problem and ways to mitigate it in the reality of how society functions in the USA. Better to spend a lot of money on free mental health services and make sure that everyone who needs them gets timely access and effective treatments including free medication.

@dorianshadesofgray It is the largest defence contractor in Australia (and the UK), whatever their name is this week... This was a while ago, I'm a full time dad of 5 home educated kids now, so much harder work and a lot less money, LOL.

@dorianshadesofgray Yeah it was, and thanks. I made a commitment to my family and I am sticking with it, even though I'd rather go off and do stuff on my own in peace and quiet, that will have to wait another decade.

Actually I worked with people who makes guns that can do that, but only the DOD get to play with such things and not random loons off the street who should have had access to free mental health care and medication.

@simonharris4873 Mass murderers always find a way, that is the problem with just obsessing over the tools they use. I could give you a big list of ways that a mentally ill person, or a very angry one that lacks empathy (same thing really) could to great harm, so stop kidding yourself.

@simonharris4873 Nobody is giving them guns, that society is saturated in them, and pistols are by far the worst when it comes to deaths in total. Identifying the mentally ill is not an issue as it is very rare for such criminals to not have some sort of record, what is less common is that they were adequately treated. You may find these facts politically inconvenient but they are still facts and go to the heart of the matter. Banning rifles etc. is just a cynical excuse to not seriously tackle the root cause.

@simonharris4873 Clearly nothing in this topic is even remotely within the scope of your knowledge or experience. You are entitled to your opinions, mate, but they are of very little value. I talk to people who work with "broken" people on a daily basis, the major barriers to diagnosis and treatment are cultural and economic, but they need to be changed or there will be no end to the violence and only the methods will change.
