The other night we had 80% of the national electricity generation running on some form of fossil carbon, with the rest made up from hydro (stored gravitational potential). What really failed was the wind generation, there just wasn't enough of it at night and for long enough because the greenies are fools and think that wind and solar randomness can somehow balance out and give your reliable power. If you want cheap and reliable power you must burn carbon or go nuclear, or spend a vast amount of money to bore down far enough toward the Earth's core to utilise the residual heat found there, which is the product of radioactive decay anyway!

You can build 40 advanced nuclear reactors for 400 billion dollars, which is more than Australia would currently need for 100% of its peak electricity consumption. In fact the more of them you build from the same state of the art design the cheaper they become and it also opens up an export market opportunity too. Sell our uranium and the devices needed to utilise it safely.

@eb2505 Ah no that would be a different thing, that would be a sink/source for a heat pump. Deep ground source heat pumps are a thing, but they don't go that deep. You have to go down many kilometers before the heat is at useful enough levels in most of Australia as the "hot dry rocks" that are ideal are only found in a few mostly remote areas of Australia far from potential users of the power.

@eb2505 Nah, to bore that deep you need a rig as large as you do for oil exploration. Evidence or it never happened.

@Wutang 4eva The cloud cover is the issue, and if the Earth was going to get warmer you get more water in the atmosphere from it evaporating off the oceans, and that means more clouds, not less. Most solar PV cells need direct sunlight and at the right angle to the surface of the cell, not light diffused through clouds.
