  1.  @101fobster  No renewables for anything other than opportunistic energy usage is a suicidal idea. The AEMO figures are so optimistic that they should be considered dangerously delusional. They do not account for the known worst case scenarios that the grid will face in the future. The reality is that Australia needs to keep coal and gas fired power generation, or build 40 fast molten salt thorium fueled reactors which would cover the entire nation's electricity requirements. So that would be 4 reactors times 10 plants or an equivalent combination to cover variations in demand by region. We should approach things at that scale because it ensures that the unit cost is minimised and the knowledge management, growing the industry skill base, is as efficient as possible. Once we have established this local industry we can keep running the program to maintain the existing plants and build new ones as demand rises. This would be entirely sustainable for centuries, easily long enough for fusion power to become commercialised.
